Southend Saxons 21-24 Colchester
JOSH WARD admitted both he and his Southend Saxons side were left stunned after allowing Colchester to snatch a London One North victory at Warners Bridge, this after the hosts had established a healthy lead midway through the second period.
Coming off the back of a loss to Eton Manor, Southend had hoped to bounce back. And indeed, that looked likely to be the case as they held a 21-13 advantage with just over a quarter of an hour remaining.
But a series of penalties left the door ajar and the north Essex side took full advantage, narrowly winning the game with its final kick.
“We’re absolutely gutted as a group,” the Saxons Director of Rugby bemoaned.
“We needed to respond today after last week, which I felt we did. But the last quarter killed us, we conceded thirteen penalties in twenty-minutes.
“I felt we were the more expansive side that looked to play and at times we were excellent, they’re an experienced bunch though and to their credit, they found a way in the end.”
Ward continued: “Our game management as a fifteen was slightly erratic, which leaves us with a self-inflicted defeat feeling.
“The bottom line is we shouldn’t be losing games when 21-13 up with twenty minutes to go.
“Were we better than last week? Yes! Have we still got a shed load to offer? Yes! – and to me, that’s hugely positive.”
Ward mentioned Southend’s second string, who returned to winning ways against their Colchester counterparts: “It was another outstanding shift from our Priors – very pleasing. We will be looking for another good week ahead of Sudbury.”
