Southend Saxons 20-0 Chingford
JOSH WARD was delighted to see his Southend Saxons side keep up the winning habit to book an Essex RFU Senior Cup semi-final berth as Chingford were beaten at Warners Bridge.
The Saxons Director of Rugby looked on as his charges secured a comfortable 20-0 success, despite considerably rotating his ever-improving squad.
“I’m really pleased with that, there were some young guys out there today, the maturity and the professionalism they showed to get the job done was excellent,” Ward acclaimed.
“The first half we controlled really well, utilised their ill-discipline for territory gain and scored some good tries, our senior lads showed great leadership throughout which helped us through.”
The Saxons chief continued: “The second half was disappointing, very stop-start and as a result, we couldn’t build any momentum. We put some great ‘D’ sets together forcing errors and took scoring opportunities when they arrived which again showed some good game management and execution. To ‘nil’ a team and get through to a semi-final is a great feeling.
“Today showed the squad quality in depth we’ve been building over the past eighteen months, the togetherness and energy of the group which is hugely satisfying.
“We’ve got a big week, Rochford away on Friday Night and North Walsham at home on Saturday. We’ve got plenty to do before then.”
Southend Saxons will now face old adversaries, Rochford Hundred, in the sem-final. The match will be staged at Rochford’s Magnolia Road Ground on Saturday, February 8. The other last-four tie will see Thurrock take on Colchester.
