Essex batters Tom Westley and Nick Browne made the most of a weather-affected LV= Insurance County Championship Divison One first day against Kent at Canterbury.

Skipper Westley finished the day unbeaten on 71 from 94 balls, while Browne’s 54 came off 128 as Essex reached 164 for one before rain showers ensured an early conclusion to proceedings.

Alastair Cook scored 39 before he was snaffled in the gloves of Sam Billings off a delivery from Wes Agar. However, the Kent attack had little else to enthuse over as the visitors dominated.
