Westley bidding to avoid a bear-trap

Warwickshire v Essex – Edgbaston – Specsavers County Championship Division One – Day Three

Warwickshire 517(175.5 overs)
Essex 278/6 (101.0 overs)
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl
Essex trail by 239 runs with four wickets remaining

ESSEX batted doggedly in abid to save the match, reaching 278/6 at stumps fon day three at Edgbaston.

Warwickshire – largely thanks to a brilliant 173 from Matthew Lamb – had posted a mammoth 517 as they stepped up the bid to avoid relegation while putting a dent in the visitors Specsavers County Championship Division One title aspirations in the process.

Indeed, resuming on 31/1, Essex faced a grim task to save the match. But Tom Westley kept his cool, finishing the day unbeaten on 123 edging his side closer, albeit steadily, towards the follow-on tally of 368.

Ably supported by Nick Browne – the pair compiling a third-wicket stand of 106 – Essex sailed towards safer seas. Browne eventually fell for 65, snared lbw by Jeetan Patel – the Bears skipper finishing the day with figures of 3/60.

Westley, along with Adam Wheater (1), was in the middle at the close. Both facing another tough examination on the final day as Essex look to salvage batting points from what is now surely unwinnable position. Play resumes on Thursday at 11am
