Tom Westley hit a double century as Essex took charge on day two of their LV Insurance County Championship encounter with Worcestershire at Chelmsford.

The Essex skipper picked up where he left off. His 408-ball innings included 32 boundaries, the 32-year-old having passed 20,500 first-class runs during the opening days play.

He was eventually dismissed, caught by Ed Barnard off a delivery from Brett D’Oliveira.

Adam Wheater was also amongst the runs as the hosts continued to compile a formidable total, scoring 87 off 149, while Dan Lawrence’s 46 earlier in the proceedings helped Essex to maximum batting points.

The decoration came immediately after Wheater was removed, Barnard and D’Oliveira again doing the trick – the pair each taking three wickets for the visitors.

Right-arm fast-medium, Sam Cook put the icing on a pretty much perfect day for the champions. The 23-year-old claimed the wickets of Daryl Mitchell, Tom Fell and Gareth Roderick within five deliveries. Worcestershire struggling on 43/3 at the close – Cook 3/14 from his seven overs.
