Close – Bad light stopped play

Tom Westley provided the spark for Essex, passing 20,500 first-class runs on what was a chilly start to their LV Insurance County Championship title defence at Chelmsford.

The new season got underway in cold, murky conditions with the home side making steady progress before bad light ensured an early conclusion to the opening days proceedings.

Skipper Westley was unbeaten on 84 at the close, having passed 20,500 first-class runs, with Paul Walter on 26*. Earlier, Lawrence and Westley put together 73 for the third wicket – the former appearing unimpressed to be given out lbw from a ball by Ed Barnard which initially looked a little high after he’d reached 46 off 83 balls.

Barnard was the pick of the Worcestershire attack, having already claimed Nick Browne (26) thanks to a catch from Jake Libby at cover – He finished the day with 2/38.

The gloomy skies forced the players off at ten past five and although they returned, only a further seven deliveries were possible before they were sent back again. Play resumes on Friday at 11am.
