Tommy Whale – Basildon United
Sixteen-year-old Basildon United supporter, Tommy Whale, is featured as our #YellowSport Fan of the Week
How long have you supported Basildon United?
I’ve been properly supporting Basildon United for almost three years now. I say ‘properly’ because I did go to a game back on April 8, 2018, when the Bees were competing in the Essex Senior League – seeing them win 2-0 over FC Romania.
Not long after that, they earned promotion to the Isthmian League after beating Redbridge 1-0 on the final day of the season.
I started going to watch the Bees play every week, home and away, on September 8, 2018, when we played in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round against Peterborough Sports. Unfortunately, the Bees lost 2-0 but both myself and my sister both got season tickets after that game and become part of the football club.
Where in the ground do you sit?
I normally go behind the goal at our ground. Not many fans in non-league sit. It’s all about standing up and making lots of noise and getting behind your team. The majority of the time I will be behind the goal with my sister and the rest of the New Town Loyals chanting and singing until the final whistle.
Favourite all-time player?
My favourite all-time player would have to be Joe Turpin. This is because during his time at the club he earned the title of being a fans favourite. We went through some tough times in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons -both times he stuck around at the club and still gave it his best. He was very close to me personally and was such a fantastic person to talk to.
Favourite current player?
My favourite current player, I would have to say is, Adam Vyse. He always gives it his best every game he plays and has scored some fantastic goals. He is another player I’m close with off the pitch – I get along with him well.
Most memorable match?
The match I consider most memorable so far would have to be Soham Town Rangers away last season. We made the long trip up there knowing that if we won the game we’d be safe from relegation. We went up there and got the job done with a 2-1 win – Callum Taylor and Kurt Smith scoring the goals – keeping us in the Isthmian League for another season. It was a fantastic day for the club.
If I could sign one player for my team it would be?
If I could have any player sign for Basildon United I’d have to say purely because he’s my favourite West Ham player, Michael Antonio. Such a hard-working player with bags of pace. Michail is fantastic at creating and taking chances and the celebrations are always funny and amazing. He’s just the type of guy I think I’d get along with well if I ever did get the chance to meet him.
