With the inclement weather causing uncertainty, Yellow Sports Matchday is a day later than usual with the focus on Colchester United’s Sky Bet League Two clash with Mansfield Town.
Of course, firstly we must congratulate Southend United, who climbed out of the League Two dropzone following a hard-earned goalless draw at leaders, Cambridge United yesterday afternoon.
The Blues trip to the Abbey Stadium survived a late pitch inspection following some sterling works from the Cambridge ground staff.
Ensuring they beat the weather, Colchester put their game with the Stags back 24 hours. The U’s are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their famous FA Cup fifth-round victory over mighty Leeds United. Indeed, the club has produced a commemorative programme including memories from our very own Ray Crawford, who netted two of Colchester’s goals in what was regarded at the time as the biggest shock in the history of the competition.
Speaking to Yellow Sport during the week, Crawford said: “It was a wonderful time for the football club. Our manager, Dick Graham, was brilliant. He had a plan and looked after us as if we were the First Division team.
“The memories of that day are still very fresh. Scoring two of the goals was fantastic for me. But the fact we are still here talking about it half a century later proves just how special it was.”
But back to the present, Colchester has some issues to deal with. Steve Ball’s side are without a win in eleven league matches and are rapidly becoming embroiled in a relegation battle. I’ll be bringing you team news, updates a report and reaction from the JobServe starting at 2pm.
Tomorrow evening, I’ll be heading to East London, where West Ham United are looking to stay in touch with the top four when Sheffield United visit the London Stadium. The Hammers currently occupy sixth place – coverage stats from 5pm.
Stay safe – Jeevesie x
