Zenia makes history in Westcliff’s win over Old Boys

Thirteen-year-old Zenia Sansom made local cricketing history by becoming the first female cricketer to represent Westcliff On Sea in a competitive adult fixture in their 120-year history.

Zenia helped Westcliff’s 5th XI to a 27-run victory over their Old Southendian & Southchurch counterparts at Belfairs Park, contributing with both the bat and ball.

The New Hall School pupil returned bowling figures of one for 26 from her seven overs. Meanwhile, Samir Shah and Zachary Everitt each took three wickets as the home side dismissed the Old Boys within 42 overs for 144.

Wicketkeeper/batter, Dave Dove, top-scored for the visitors, hitting 30. Earlier, George Currell scored 61 as Westcliff posted 171. Kevan Pratt was the pick of the Old Boys attack with impressive figures of 6/33.

Speaking to Yellow Sport, Zenia enthused: “After 120 years of men playing league cricket at Westcliff On Sea Cricket Club, I’m so happy to be the first female player and I hope more women will follow in my footsteps.”
