Zouma issue overshadows Hammers win

West Ham United v Watford – Premier League – London Stadium – Reaction

West Ham United 1-0 Watford

It was a scruffy performance with a huge slice of fortune connected to Jarrod Bowen’s winning goal. But if David Moyes thought the post-match focus would circle his West Ham United side seeing off Watford and returning to Premier League winnings ways, then he was mistaken.

Certainly, eyebrows were raised when defender, Kurt Zouma was named in the Hammers starting line-up given ‘catgate’ and the subsequent fallout. Moyes suggested he was stuck between a rock and a hard place but was ultimately angry with the former Chelsea man: “I am really disappointed, and the club have taken all the actions they can do at the moment, and working on it behind the scenes,” the Scotsman explained.

“My job is to try and pick a team which gives me the best chance at West Ham and Kurt was part of that team.”

On whether Zouma’s selection might become a moral decision with further action expected, Moyes added: “For me, yes because I am a big animal lover and I think it is something that will have affected a lot of people so I am really disappointed with it but my job tonight was to try and win for West Ham and put the best team out I could to give me that chance.”

Even when asked about football, Moyes’ mood didn’t appear to alter. His side struggled for long periods and looked leggy and off the pace throughout: “The performance was not great and it wasn’t great on Saturday either and fortunately enough we got two wins from it.

“We will need to improve if we are going to stay where we are and do what we are doing, we are going to have to play much better that is for sure.”
